Tree species affect the vertical distribution of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen

چکیده
Background Forest soils are considered sinks for atmospheric C. Many studies revealed that tree species and their mycorrhizal association affect forest floor topsoil organic C (OC) total N, while the knowledge of effect on subsoil OC N is still scarce. Aims We aimed to identify (1) effects floor, (0–30 cm) (30–80 stocks vertical distribution (2) drivers soil distribution. Methods sampled under Fagus sylvatica L., Quercus robur Acer pseudoplatanus L. Fraxinus excelsior in four Danish common garden experiments along a gradient texture determined stocks. Results Total (forest + soil) was higher oak than beech, unaffected by species. were both ectomycorrhizal (ECM), compared maple ash, which arbuscular (AM). Relatively more transferred AM ECM species, this could be explained greater endogeic earthworm biomass In contrast, proportion stored subsoil, here correlated negatively with anecic earthworms. Subsoil highest oak. Conclusions Tree particular affected N. differences not mirrored highlights need address future AM- versus ECM-mediated

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...
متن کاملCanopy Tree–soil Interactions within Temperate Forests: Species Effects on Soil Carbon and Nitrogen
In a northwestern Connecticut forest, we quantified the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content of the forest floor and the top 15 cm of mineral soil and the rate of midsummer net N mineralization beneath six different tree species. There were large interspecific differences in forest floor depth and mass, in the size and distribution of C and N pools at varying soil depths, and in rates of midsumm...
متن کاملUrban Tree Effects on Soil Organic Carbon
Urban trees sequester carbon into biomass and provide many ecosystem service benefits aboveground leading to worldwide tree planting schemes. Since soils hold ∼75% of ecosystem organic carbon, understanding the effect of urban trees on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil properties that underpin belowground ecosystem services is vital. We use an observational study to investigate effects of thre...

Estimates of potential soil organic C (SOC) and total N (TN) In a shortgrass-steppe with 56 yr of grazing in Colorado, sequestration at depths below the traditional plow layer (i.e., 0–0.3 m) in agricultural systems are needed to improve our understanding of SOC was not different between un...
متن کاملEffects of Land Use and Land Cover changes on Soil Organic Carbon and Total Nitrogen Stocks in the Olesharo Catchment, Narok County, Kenya
Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULCC) is the most prominent cause of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) variability in any landscape. Kenyan Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) have been facing extensive land use/ cover changes in the last three decades prompting a review on the impacts it has on soil quality and consequently on land degradation. This study was carried out in 2016 in Olesharo Catchment, N...
